E. A.'s father was Daniel J Van Swearingen and his mother was Kesiah Montgomery. His paternal grandparents were Abraham Van Swearingen and Elizabeth Low. He had four brothers and three sisters, named John H, Winfield S, Lemuel, Theo L, Elizabeth, Eldora and Sarah. He was the fifth oldest of the eight children. He died1904 in Colorado, USA.
